Princeton tops in US News Ranking

August 18th, 2007

Princeton holds the top spot in the latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings, the eighth straight year the private, New Jersey school has either tied or held the top slot outright.

Just like last year, Princeton was followed by Harvard at No. 2 and Yale at No. 3 in the controversial rankings. As usual, a few schools moved up or down a slot, but there were no major changes. Stanford was No. 4, followed by Cal Tech and the University of Pennsylvania tied for fifth.

Williams and Amherst were the highest-ranked liberal arts colleges.

The rankings, which hit newsstands Monday in the magazine's annual "America's Best Colleges " guide, are facing particularly vocal complaints this year from a group of colleges and educators working to develop an alternative to the system.

So far, the group led by education activist Lloyd Thacker hasn't formally enlisted any of the top-ranked schools. But the magazine has responded to one complaint: that the rankings punish schools for enrolling low-income students. For the first time this year, U.S. News is factoring the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants into its calculation of a school's "graduation rate performance."

The formula for the rankings includes variables such as graduation and retention rates, faculty and financial resources, and the percentage of alumni donating money to their alma mater. The biggest single variable -- and the most controversial -- is a reputation assessment by peer institutions.

The top 10 national universities were:
1. Princeton University
2. Harvard University
3. Yale University
4. Stanford University
5. California Institute of Technology
6. University of Pennsylvania (tie)
7. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
8. Duke University
9. Columbia University
10. University of Chicago (tie)

Quaid Abad Bridge - Don't be frustrated!

Oh my God ! The traffic has jammed again ! When we will get out of this deadly situation ! People were heard uttering these words in the point.. (my uni-bus)

But, Wait a minute!! Why are u screaming? Why are u getting frustrated? My dear! That's not only you.. but the whole public who is suffering from the same scenario. So chill up !! The better is just coming for us.

At times we just look around ourselves and curse our fate, what's happening with us; why everything is going haphazard - Well, the very simple answer to it as I mentioned is "The good is still to come"...... It's for the first time in the history I have seen that the major metropolitan city of Pakistan is progressing leaps & bounds. If we are facing these difficulties in our way of progress, that's because we were'nt able to make proper planning for our future.. and that's what were are now being examined - not by the curse of fate; not by the careless attitude of the responsibles; not by the mercy - but merely of our lack of attention.

Now that we have passed 60 years of our independence, we clearly know that we hav'nt reached there, where we had to be. But, now its time to consider once again as if we have got independence (of our attitude) just by now & start leaning efforts towards constructive side. That's all !!

Hope you get what I mean - cuz what I mean is merely not what I mean but what the whole nation means.

Thankyou.

SHAKIR SHABBIR.
